The Battle for Dominance in the AI PC Space Heats Up
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) has taken center stage at CES 2025 in Las Vegas with its latest lineup of AI PC and graphics chips. The company has announced its new Ryzen AI Max, Ryzen AI 300, and Ryzen AI 200 central processing units (CPUs), as well as high-powered chips for gaming desktops, laptops, and handheld gaming systems.
Ryzen AI Max: The Flagship of AMD’s AI Lineup
The Ryzen AI Max chips are designed to power the most demanding laptops targeting gamers and content creators. These CPUs will feature up to 128GB of unified memory and a neural processing unit capable of up to 50 TOPS (trillions of operations per second).
TOPs are a widely accepted metric for measuring a chip’s AI performance, and AMD is competing with Intel, Nvidia, and Qualcomm in this space. The Ryzen AI Max will also come in a PRO series, which will feature AMD PRO capabilities including improved security and enterprise management functionality.
AMD’s Competency in the PC Space

- (-4.31%): AMD’s stock price has dropped by 4.31% from its previous close.
Other Notable Announcements
In addition to the AI Max, AMD has also showcased its latest AI 300 and AI 300 Pro Series chips, including the Ryzen AI 7 350 and Ryzen AI 5 340. These processors are designed for AI PCs that require less power than the AI Max but still need robust performance.
The AI 300 and AI 300 Pros offer 50 TOPS of AI performance, making them suitable for running Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC apps, including Recall and Click to Do options. These features allow users to take snapshots of their activity, quickly pick up where they left off, and perform dynamic actions related to on-screen text and images.
Ryzen 200: The Affordable Option
AMD has also debuted its Ryzen 200 and Ryzen 200 PRO Series chips for affordable consumer and enterprise laptops. Unlike the Ryzen AI Max and Ryzen AI 300 processors, however, the Ryzen 200 only offers 16 TOPS, which may limit its ability to run more advanced AI applications.
Gaming-Focused CPUs: A Key Focus Area
Beyond its AI PC CPUs, AMD has announced a slew of new gaming-focused CPUs for desktops, laptops, and handheld PCs. For hardcore PC gamers and content creators, there’s the Ryzen 9950X3D and Ryzen 9900X3D.
For high-performance laptops, AMD offers the new Ryzen 9000HX Series chips, which provide better temperature control to save on battery life. Finally, the company revealed its Ryzen Z2 Series gaming chips for handheld gaming systems.
A Chip Market Showdown in the Making
AMD’s announcements come as it seeks to steal greater market share from rival Intel and as Qualcomm continues to push into the PC market. Intel is facing an arduous turnaround effort after former CEO Pat Gelsinger was pushed out by its board following a decline in shares.
Qualcomm, while still a relatively small player in the PC space, is showing promise with its chips’ power and performance. With AMD’s strong lineup, it appears well-positioned for what could be a major chip market showdown in 2025.
